Leadership Lecture Handout
LEADERSHIP THAT GETS RESULTS
THE PROBLEM
- Managers fail to see the impact organizational climate has on financial results
- Organizational climate is influenced by leadership style
- Each leadership style is effective only for certain business situations
- Managers often don’t exhibit all necessary leadership styles
THE THEORY
- Business situations call for certain leadership styles for a successful outcome
- Leaders need competence in all leadership styles
- The ability to fluidly switch between styles based on the situation is crucial
CLASS ACTIVITY
For the following situations, brainstorm leadership styles that would be effective in correcting the problem. Offer examples of plans of action for each.
After the economic collapse and bailout of GM, a new CEO was hired. Thousands of employees have been laid off, and many current employees are scared for their jobs. Morale is low throughout the company and the recent layoffs have left a taste of distrust in the mouths of employees. The company has been running “fat” for years and needs fresh ideas to lean out the business and improve profits. Much of the company feels that their voices have not been heard in the past and that their ideas could help the situation. What leadership styles could the new CEO implement?

Arrival at YMCA
I think we have transportation figured out but just to make sure I'm listing how each of us plans to make it to the party with the friends we are bringing.
I'm driving - myself, Chris, Niko, and Ryan
Nick is driving - himself, Marissa, Shauna
Ally - herself, Erin
Andrew - himself
If anyone finds something that is incorrect with this, please let me know so that we can figure out what we need to do to make sure everyone gets to the Y on time.
Helpers
If everyone could list who they have coming to help with out party that would be great.
So far I have help from:
- Marissa Gillett
- Shauna Botlo
Thanks,
Nick

Contact With Robin (YMCA Contact)
I think we should all go to the YMCA on Friday even if we can't get a hold of Robin by then because we could still get someone else to show us the room the party will be held in so that we're all on the same page as far as that goes. Let me know what you think about this.

Fall Party Activities - Materials Needed
Activity List:
1. Candy Fishing
Children use a “fishing pole” to fish for candy over a barrier. The fishing pole will consist of a pole probably made out of a yard stick or an actual fishing rod. The fishing line will consist of either twine or actual fishing line. The hook will be a clothes pin in which the candy will be attached to the fishing line. Behind the barrier a member of the Purdue volunteer group will attach a piece of candy to the end of the fishing line. The child will then get to keep the candy that they receive by fishing.
Volunteers Needed: 1 to 2 people
Cost: $24
This cost is attributed to the cost of the candy. It is believed that the other materials will be able to be obtained without needing to actually purchase items.
Materials Needed: Fishing pole, line, clothes pin, candy (6 bags fun size candy bar, 18 ct.), barrier
2. Fall Themed Story
At this station the kids will listen to a fall themed story read aloud by one of the Purdue volunteer group. This station may be combined with the snack station if it is found that the number of children only requires six stations instead of seven.
Volunteers Needed: 1
Cost: None
It is believed that a fall themed book will be able to be found without requiring a purchase of some kind.
Materials Needed: Fall themed book
3. Snack/Drink Station
At this station, kids will get a snack that goes along with the fall theme of the party such as pumpkin shaped cookies and apple cider for example. This station may be combined with the story telling station as previously explained.
Volunteers Needed: 1
Cost: $63
This cost includes enough cookies or similar treat for 70 kids, and a about 5 bottles of juice for the children.
Materials Needed: Drinks and cookies to feed around 70 kids. (3 boxes 36 cookies, 8 bottles juice – 32 oz)
4. Mummy Wrap Relay
Here kids will work in a group to wrap themselves, one at a time, in toilet paper as if they were mummies. Each team of kids will be timed and the fastest group at the end of the party will be awarded by applause and possibly an extra piece of candy of some kind.
Volunteers Needed: 1
Cost: $37
Materials Needed: Toilet paper rolls, (other material that may be reusable?), enough for 70 kids to participate (75 rolls, cheap toilet paper)
5. Art Station
At this station kids will participate in a fun fall themed art project of some kind. Here the children will be either given a small pumpkin or gourd to paint or materials to create a fall themed picture. We will challenge the kids to create the best Fall themed gourd or picture that they can in the 15 minutes they have at the station. To increase the art station’s fall theme feeling, we may incorporate using leaves collected prior to the party in the kids’ drawings. This will give the kids something to take home with them and give to their parents or to simply keep as a souvenir of the Fall Party.
Volunteers Needed: 1
Cost: $129
This cost is mainly due to the cost of the gourds and the paints. It is believed that the colored pencils and crayons needed will be able to be obtained without requiring their purchase. We may decide at a later time that colored pencils and crayons are the way to go for the art station due to the mess of paints and the limited time to allow the kids to clean their hands before moving to the next station.
Materials Needed: Gourds (enough for 70 kids), paints, colored pencils or crayons, paper, possibly leaves collected prior to the party
6. Pin the Stem on the Pumpkin Challenge
This station will be a remake of the old pin the tail on the donkey game. Kids will take turns being blind folded and attempting to put a paper stem onto a paper pumpkin. This will not be made into any kind of competition. It is simply fun to see how difficult it is to accomplish putting the stem in the right place on the pumpkin.
Volunteers Needed: 1
Cost: None
These materials can be obtained for close to no cost.
Materials Needed: Paper pumpkin, paper stem, blindfold
7. Candy Corn Relay Race
At this station kids will be divided into two teams. Each team will be given a spoon. With that spoon, kids will take turns walking a certain distance to a bucket full of candy corn. They will then scoop out as much candy corn as they can hold in the spoon and walk it back to their team where another (originally empty) bucket will be. The kids will deposit the candy corn into the bucket and pass the spoon to the next team member. The race will continue for a specified amount of time, enough for each child to collect candy twice for their team, and the amount of candy corn in each team’s bucket will be counted. The team with the most candy corn in their bucket will be declared the winner.
Volunteers Needed: 1
Cost: $16
This cost comes from the purchase of the candy corn, buckets will be collected in other ways to save money.
Materials Needed: Candy Corn (3 bags, 22 oz each), 4 buckets
8. Face Painting Station
This will be a station where kids can get a simple pumpkin or other fall themed picture painted on a cheek or their forehead. Word searches and mazes will be provided for those kids waiting to have their face painted or do not wish to have their face painted.
Volunteers Needed: 2
Cost: $23
Materials Needed: Face Paint, brushes (2 face painting kits)
